About the Department

The Department of Geography at the Université de Montréal was founded in November 1947. Its research and teaching combine the humanities and natural sciences environment from an environmental perspective.

The Department's mission is to help students acquire a multifaceted understanding of both physical and human geography and to master geographic tools and methods. The environment is the over-riding theme under which the different aspects of geography taught in the Department are addressed. Through its programs of study, the Department trains environmentally conscious geographers who will contribute to the future development of society, by applying a geographic approach to problem solving.

Our research targets the Americas, Asia, Europe and Africa. Our faculty are published in the top scientific journals (Nature, Social Science and Medicine, Climatic Change, etc.). Four large research themes are put forward:

  • Space, communities and development
  • Society and environment
  • Earth science
  • Geographic information science
